Zinc is then added to this solution to displace silver from the complex: $2[Ag(CN)_2]^- + Zn \rightarrow [Zn(CN)_4]^{2-} + 2Ag$. In this reaction,$Zn$ is oxidized to $Zn^{2+}$ and $Ag^+$ is reduced to $Ag$. Therefore,zinc acts as a reducing agent.
